Most people invest plenty of time and money in a skincare routine but forget about the rest of their body. Okay, so you aren’t that person but you do the bare minimum when it comes to body care or, you are satisfied with your current routine but are looking for ways to elevate it. Read on.
You should first know that our body is the primary defense against the environment. Aesthetician Joanna Czech says “Twenty-five percent of our body’s immune system is found in our skin cells, but only a tiny amount of our skin is on our face – the rest is on our body”.
Just like you cleanse, exfoliate and moisturize (and possibly more) your face, the same applies to the rest of your body. After all, your complexion deserves everything it needs to glow, stay healthy, supple and youthful.
Your upgraded body care routine
1. Dry Brushing: This is a daily body massage with a dry, stiff-bristled brush. It exfoliates the skin, sloughing off dead skin cells to relieve tension, promote cell renewal, stimulate lymphatic drainage, increase circulation and temporarily minimize the look of cellulite. This should be done daily, using small, circular motions all over the body starting from the feet going up towards your heart.
2. Exfoliate: 2 times a week, dampen your skin in the shower and scoop up a generous amount of your favourite scrub. Massage in circular motions to help get rid of the dry, dead skin. Body scrubs usually contain sugar or types of salt, blended with oils such as almond, olive, or coconut and can be naturally fragranced with essential oils, lemons, peppermint or coffee. Overdoing this will damage your the outermost layer of your skin.
3. Cleanser: Using a wash cloth or a sponge, lather up in your favorite body wash. The gentler the better. Rinse off the left over scrub granules and the dead cells from dry brushing. Make sure your water isn’t too hot as really hot showers can leave you with dry skin and damage your skin barrier. You can also opt for a bubble bath here.
4. Moisturizer: A good moisturizer can leave your skin radiant, protected, and feeling super soft. Regardless of skin type, slather on your favourite moisturizer and massage it into your skin. For best results, apply your moisturizer while your skin is still damp. Reach for a moisturizer formulated for your specific skincare needs
5. Body oil: Add a little extra glow and luxury and maximize the great benefits of your moisturizer by opting for a body oil. The best body oils are light yet luxurious, glowy but not oily, and some may have added benefits such sun protection and scar healing. Depending on your mood, you can pick up an oil with a little shimmer for a night or evening out. It is best to choose lightweight oils that sink immediately into the skin, to avoid any residue.
6. Sunscreen: Never leave the house without protection! Wearing sunscreen not only protects your skin from harmful UV rays but also prevents sun spots, wrinkles, and other forms of premature aging.
